I absolutely love The North
Mississippi Hill-Country Blues. When those hypnotic grooves take hold, it’s
pure bliss. Gary Burnside, the youngest son of the late great R.L.
Burnside has been performing professionally since he was eleven. Having
played over the years with his pop R.L., Junior Kimbrough, North
Mississippi Allstars, Hill Country Revue, his brother Duane
Burnside and his nephew Cedric Burnside, Garry wonderfully
carries his legacy forward with the release of It’s My Time Now, the debut
album of his solo career. Recorded at Royal Studios in Memphis, Tennessee
and produced by Grammy award-winner Boo Mitchell, the record
features Garry on guitar and vocals. He is joined by Andrea Stanton
on rhythm guitar, Pinky Pullman on bass, and Avery Dilworth on
drums.
This eleven-track recording gets rolling with “High”, a searing and funky instrumental with a lead-in which quickly reminds me of Funkadelic’s “Hit It Or Quit It”. Burnside’s guitar performance on this is smokin’ hot. The music is kept on high heat with more amazing fretwork in “Young Country Boy” as sings of his roots in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Words of wisdom about heading out on one’s own are handed down on top of an intoxicating rhythm in “It’s My Time Now”. I sidle right up to this one. His homage to RL “Bad Luck City” is an amazing instrumental fully-loaded with tight licks. It’s great to hear “Ramblin’”, Burnside’s hill-country-soaked tribute to Junior Kimbrough, rock that North Mississippi grind. I dig how that NMA vibe on “She’s Gone”. Pullman keeps that low-end going strong on “AGF”, a track Burnside states is his outro song. This super-funky instrumental with a Hendrix vibe gives each musician a slice of time to shine in the spotlight.
It's My Time Now is a splendid guitar-centric funky Hill-Country blues-rock album. Burnside has a real gem with this record.
