Emily Fennell aka Miss Emily is a powerhouse of a singer/songwriter. In 2019 she was awarded three Canadian Maple Blues Awards. In 2022 her album Live at the Isabel was nominated for a Juno award for Best Blues Album. Miss Emily also pulled down the Maple Blues Female Vocalist of the Year award in both 2021 and 2023. Her new album The Medicine is bound to keep the momentum going with strong songwriting, standout vocals, and tight production. This nine-track recording features Miss Emily front and center on vocals, with guitarist/producer Colin Linden, drummer George Recile, bassist David Santos, and Michael Hicks on Hammond B3.

“Stand Together” is a beautiful piece of overcoming obstacles in life by helping each other out. In ways, the song is reminiscent of those released in the early years of Larkin Poe. Beautifully sung and dripping with emotion, title-track “The Medicine” induces a heavy heart within myself as the song reveals the story of a tragic overdose. I absolutely love “Maybe”.  Guest guitarist Rob Baker from The Tragically Hip injects a Sixties hippie-folk vibe into the song as the grand sound of B3 hovers between the notes. Miss Emily’s vocal range is astonishing to take in. As the funky groove of “Running Again” rolls in, my head starts bopping. It’s a damn good song. From a poem written in 1866 by Miss Shannon which was set to music by Suzanne Pasternak, “Smith’s Bay Drowning” relates the story of capsized boat on Lake Ontario in Prince Edward County where Miss Emily’s family has lived for eight generations. The song is brilliantly haunting as I hang on every word sung. “Remember This Song” brings the record to a close in a wonder-filled way. Miss Emily’s soulful voice sings this to perfection with a magnificent performance by Linden and the band.

The Medicine shines from start to finish. My affinity for this release from Miss Emily grows stronger with each and every listen.
