This past summer one of my
favorite Austin, Texas-based blues-rockers Alastair Greene opened
for George Thorogood in Las Vegas, Nevada. Fortunately, Greene
recently released a smokin’, high-voltage five track EP Live in Sin City
which wonderfully captures this lightning-in-a-bottle performance. I know that
had to have been a spectacular night of music. With Greene on guitar and
vocals, the rest of this amazing three-piece is comprised of Anthony Ambriz
on drums, and Justin Sedillo on bass.
A greeting to the audience, followed by a no-holds-barred, thunder-filled serving of “Temptation” from the 2024 Standing Out Loud release makes for a perfectly suited opener. “Trouble at Your Door” follows up next. The face-melting guitar performance from Greene on the bridge draws my full attention. Beautifully melding with Ambriz and Sedillo, this truly is magnificent. I love the heavy groove and infectiously buttery bassline on “Standing Out Loud”. It constructs a really nice space for Greene to do what he does best. I am glad to hear “Slow Burn” land on this EP. It’s Another favorite from the Standing Out Loud album. Loaded with a driving rhythm, and accented with a bit of slide, this one absolutely cooks. The show comes to an end, with Greene bringing a big slice of Texas to the stage as he masterfully covers Johnny Winters’ “Mean Town Blues”. It makes for a grand finale indeed.
Alastair Greene’s Live in Sin City, demands to be heard... not just once, but over and over. This is one hell-of-a-cookin’ record.
