Fortified with a fearless beauty,
Brigitte Purdy’s voice hooked me from my very first listen. She’s a powerful singer and her songs stand
tall. Her latest release Mother of
the Crossroads, produced and co-written by multi-instrumentalist Dave
Osti, is a glamourous, nine-track, groove-filled record of blues-rock. With Purdy on lead vocals, Osti
on guitars, bass, drums, acoustic piano, percussion, backing vocals, and Drake Shining on keys, B3, backing vocals, the album absolutely rocks. Also included are guest appearances by Michael
Fell on harmonica, and drummer Jimmy Keegan.
A Steely Dan-esque intro fires the record off with “Sugar Fried Candy”. It’s an infectious song with a majestic vocal performance and a smoking serving of electric guitar. Loaded heavily with the sound of B3, “Blues Collar Woman” follows next, riding on top of an intoxicating funky Seventies-era groove. I love the way Purdy pours her entire self into the delivery of this song. From a swampy, rootsy beginning, there’s a masterfully built sense of fleeting time on “Losin’ Time For Love”. I’m thrilled with the slide guitar and hard-hitting chords from Osti as Purdy sings this with a blues-soaked attack. “Rise Like the Water” brings this record to a climatic end in a revival-like spirit. Layers of keys, guitar licks which cut to the bone, clapping hands, and backing vocals come together for an immense wall of sound, for Purdy’s voice to stand above. It’s magnificent.
Brigitte Purdy’s Mother of the Crossroads is a spectacular listen from beginning to end. I highly recommend this record.
