In March of this year, I
reviewed the new album Low and Slow from Bear Ryan and the Delta
Snakes. I absolutely loved it. With cigar box in hand, Bear’s songs are
delivered North Mississippi-style with gut-punching lyrics which hit with a
brute force. During my short visit to Clarksdale
this past weekend to attend the Pinetop Boogie & Crawfish Boil at Ground
Zero Blues Club, I had the opportunity to catch the band perform live on the
Delta Blues Museum’s outdoor stage downtown Friday evening, and I did not
want to pass it up. With Bear on
cigar box guitar and vocals, she is joined by guitarist/luthier Ryan
Robertson, owner of Delta Avenue Guitars in Clarksdale. Every guitar on stage that evening was built
by him. Also joining Bear on guitar is Kevin “Frenchie” Sciou aka
Guitar Frenchie. I loved hearing performances
of the songs off the new record: “Woman”, “Snake Handler’s Daughter”, “I am the
Weather”, “Bad Old Man”, and “War Path”.
With temperatures hovering
around seventy degrees, it was an absolutely beautiful Mississippi evening
to sit in a lawn chair and listen to music.
