For those of us who came of
age in the Seventies, Back to the Blues, the new album from Connecticut-based
blues-rockers Beyond 1969, is comfort food for the ears. Fronted by singer/songwriter/guitarist Tom
Forst aka The Suit, this quartet invokes the glory days of album-oriented
rock with this ten-track all-original record. The other remaining members of Beyond 1969
are Tony Delisio on bass guitar and vocals, Jeff Bousfield on
keys, and Bryan Caudle on drums/percussion.
The album opens with “I’m Never Gonna Leave You” which immediately grabs me with its hypnotic rhythm, long-hanging guitar notes, and saxophone accompaniment. It hits me with a Steely Dan vibe which I absolutely love. I dig the funky groove swimming through “Comin’ Back to the Blues”. Loaded with Forst’s smoldering guitar licks, and Bousfield’s amazing keyboard mastery, this infectious track is definitely ear-worm worthy. The acoustic guitar intro on “Goin’ Down” is played with a beautiful, melancholy finesse as Forst sings this dark ballad of self-reflection.
Back to the Blues is a solid album from start to finish. It’s certainly worth checking out.
