Whenever I visit Clarksdale,
Mississippi, I usually get an opportunity to hear Kevin Sciou aka Guitar
Frenchie play guitar. Most recently,
I heard him play with Bear Ryan and the Delta Snakes last month on a
Friday evening at the outdoor stage of the Delta Blues Museum. It was a terrific show. Frenchie’s talents run quite deep as a
guitarist and singer/songwriter.
Originally from Nimes, France, Sciou has lived in the States
now for nearly twenty-five years. In his
earlier years in the US, he backed artists such as Shooter Jennings and Jack
Ingram. Guitar Frenchie’s
latest release A Collection of Songs is a magnificent thirty-four song compilation
available on Bandcamp.
“I Long to Come Home” has a lovely Beatle-esque sound and energy which navigates through both the music and lyrics. I love how Guitar Frenchie fills his musical canvas. The guitar outro on this one is a brilliant psychedelic treat. “Praise” pulls right into its rich, murky soundscape for a beautiful, melancholy listen. It has a way to cutting right to the bone. With a heavily distorted guitar riff, “Get Through to You” baptizes the listener with a wave of delicious hill-country blues and I dig every bit of it. Recorded as a duet with Bekka Bramlett (daughter of Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett), “Indifferent You” is a wonderful slice of Americana. Bramlett’s rich and soulful vocals sound wonderful along with Frenchie’s slide guitar. A bumping bassline and a thunderous beat set the stage for “Maricopa County Blues” as Frenchie delivers a bodacious bowlful of real-deal blues served with a sizzling helping of harmonica. He servers up another dose of blues-excellence with the instrumental “Nimes Shuffle”. Frenchie’s guitar performance is absolute cooking on this one.
I highly recommend Guitar Frenchie’s A Collection of Songs. It is an absolute gem and a fantastic listen from beginning to end.
