When I see the iconic artwork of Vince Ray gracing the cover of a new album, I get excited because there’s a great chance it means brand-new material from Bob Corritore. Ray’s stunning covers construct a visual connection to a time period in which the greatest blues music was being recorded. Bob Corritore and Friends then masterfully transport the listener back in time to that classic era of blues. Doin’ the Shout commemorates Corritore’s thirtieth album release and features a dozen timeless songs with the harmonica legend along with a downright amazing guestlist which includes Bobby Rush, Thornetta Davis, Bob Stroger, Nora Jean, John Primer, Francine Reed, Oscar Wilson, Tia Carroll, Jimi Primetime Smith, Carla Denise, Bob Margolin, Duke Robillard, Kid Ramos, Johnny Burgin, Johnny Rapp, Anthony Geraci, Ben Levin, Dave Keyes, and Mark Earley.    

Energy abundantly flows on title-track “Doin’ the Shout”. With Corritore ripping it up on harp and the fabulous Nora Jean giving a fearless performance on vocals, this one really gets me moving. The way Oscar Wilson lends his smooth-as-silk voice to B.B. King’s “Just a Dream” is exquisite. With Bob Margolin on guitar and Anthony Geraci on piano, this song is a blues-lover’s treat. I love the soul-drenched Bobby Rush track “I’ve Got Three Problems”. Dexter Allen keeps it fun and funky on guitar. It’s great to hear Thornetta Davis belt out her song “That Don’t Appease Me”.  Corritore heats this one up on harp with guitarist Johnny Burgin and pianist Dave Keyes on board. This one is definitely a cookin’ track. “Same Old Thing” brings Jimi ‘Primetime’ Smith and Carla Denise together for a gem of a duet made to be heard from the dancefloor. It’s a dazzling performance through and through. The record comes to a close with Bob Stroger singing “My First Love”. The smoldering sounds of slow-cooked blues from Corritore (harp), Smith (guitar), Margolin (bass), Geraci (piano) and Wes Starr (drums) are served with perfection.         

Bob Corritore and Friends deliver nothing but one-hundred percent authentic blues with Doin’ the Shout! It doesn’t get much better than this.

It has been nearly five years since the passing of multi-award-winning Philadelphia-based blues artist Frank Bey (January 17, 1946 – June 7, 2020). To commemorate his life and shine a light on some of his lesser-known work, Nola Blue Records has released a fabulous, new compilation called Peace. There’s certainly not a better message than this to put out into the world.

The record opens up with a cover of Little Milton’s “That’s What Love Will Make You Do”, featuring The Anthony Paule Soul Orchestra. From the opening licks of Paule’s B.B. King-inspired guitar licks to the vibrant punch of horns, this track absolutely shines. A funky keyboard riff from Doug Travis drives “Midnight & Day” as Bey’s soulful vocals throw down some real-deal blues. I love the simmering original “If You Want Me”. Kevin Frieson’s buttery bassline and Brian Wolfe’s delicate beat join forces amid swirling keys make a perfect backdrop for Bey’s suave vocals. Jeff Monjack steps into the spotlight as he unleashes a guitar performance which is totally off the chain. As soon as I hear Bey’s voice sing the opening words of Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come”, a wave of emotion washes over me. This is a such a beautiful and meaningful song, and this version is gorgeous. This album ends with a cover of John Lennon’s 1971 classic “Imagine”. Fully immersed in the blues, this track features an amazing lineup of Kid Andersen on guitar, Jim Pugh on organ, Nancy Wright on saxophone and Derrick “D’mar” Martin on drums. It really doesn’t get much better than this.

Frank Bey’s Peace is a timeless collection of his work, and an album that everyone should give a listen to.

The Kearns Family a singer/songwriting duo hailing from Joshua Tree, California, has a gem of a record in their debut release Together and Alone. With Pat Kearns on guitar and vocals, and Susan Kearns on upright bass, this nine-track album was recorded at their solar-powered recording studio Goat Mountain in the Mojave Desert. Their songs are poignant and masterfully written with a deep sensibility.

“The Dust” a haunting, western-flavored ballad sets the tone. I love the little hints of Nick Drake which walk into the song with gentle guitar licks. “Bandito” immediately follows with a harmonica-accompanied intro which instantly reminds me of Neil Young. A Tarantino-esque vibe to this song about a manhunt across Mexico keeps the tone of the album flowing. Delivered much like the songs of John Prine and Tim Hardin, “The Old Days” beautifully reflects the sadness of loss and yearning for the old days. Delivered with a gravelly voice, “The Funny Thing About Keeping Moving” brilliantly sums up the life of an outlaw drifter. I can’t help but feel very moved with every listen to “Charlie”. The song is a touching tribute to an old friend who may have had some troubles, but was obviously loved.

Together and Alone steals my heart and takes my breath away with every listen.

Self-defined on their Bandcamp page as “a homegrown genre-fluid group of spry saplings that have quite the fascination for all things related to musical endeavors”, Nutmeg Party surely fits that description and more. Their music definitely transcends the cookie-cutter genres most bands try to align with. I find their debut six-track EP Nutmeg to be clever and charismatic. This Pittsburgh-based band was formed in 2023 by Andy Lewis (lead vocals/keys/ukulele), Dylan Takach (guitar), Evan Spurlock (bass/vocals), and Hayden Hanna (drums/percussion/vocals).

Behind the piano in Ben Folds-fashion, Lewis’ vocals seem to float in mid-air on the opening track “Pictures”.  This cosmic psych-pop song is wonderfully brilliant.  I love the infectious melody of “Gin & Tonic”. The song invokes a mental time-travel of sorts, as it progresses from an early era roots-music beginning to a fuzz-fueled Seventies rock ending. With a flowing groove and vocals reminiscent of Paul McCartney, “Neptune” instantly transports me to one of my favorite places in the world, the middle of a lawn-section full of hippies jamming out to favorite bands such as Phish and Disco Biscuits. It’s a gorgeous song which digs deep into the soul.

I absolutely love Nutmeg Party’s Nutmeg.  It really is a captivating listen.

I dig the carefree vibe which emits from The Hitman Blues Band’s tenth album Calling Long Distance. This ten-piece ensemble has been a staple of the New York blues scene since forming in 1986. Fronted by Russell “Hitman” Alexander on lead guitar and vocals, the rest of the band is comprised of Mike Katzman on keys, Mike Porter on bass, Guy LaFountaine on drums, John Kelly on alto sax, Tom Mineo on tenor sax, Eric Altarac on trumpet, Al Alpert on trombone. Also included are backup vocalists Joanna Alexander and Nancy Hampton  and Bob Stander who performs bass on two tracks.

Making contact with those who have crossed over to the other side oftentimes requires serious hoodoo. Hitman leaves no mojo or spirit-communicating device untried in the spirited, horn-infused blues of title-track “Calling Long Distance”. I absolutely love the amphetamine-fueled instrumental “Blood Alley”. Smoking guitar riffs, a singing organ, and wailing saxophone surf a caffeinated beat for smashing good time. The Hitman does a cool job of retooling Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues’ into a real-deal Chicago blues track. The smooth guitar sounds of “Foolish Pride” is riddled with funky licks and a delicious groove. It’s a great song to soak in.

Calling Long Distance is a fun and adventurous listen. I really enjoyed it.

There’s a deep sense of authentic blues with the latest album from Tommy Castro and The Painkillers’ Closer to the Bone, and I absolutely love it.  As Castro stated, "I have always wanted to do what I would call a real blues record, and I felt like the right time was now. There is nothing contemporary about this album. It’s a blues record the way they might have made blues records back in the day.” With Castro on guitars and vocals, he is joined by his band The Painkillers : Mike Emerson on keys, Randy McDonald on bass, and Bowen Brown on drums. His star-studded guestlist includes Christoffer “Kid” Andersen, Deanna Bogart, Billy Branch, Chris Cain, June Core, Rick Estrin, Scott Jensen, Jim Pugh, Mike Rinta, Jack Sanford, Sons of Soul Revivers, Endre Tarczy, and Lisa Leuschner Andersen.

Castro lures me quickly in with his masterful guitar-play on Jimmy Nolen’s “The Way You Do”. His twangy surf guitar is brilliantly paired with Rick Estrin on harmonica, and Kid Anderson’s infectious bassline. Johnny Nitro’s “One More Night” is fabulous to the core and filled with scorching guitar licks riding on top of an unescapable Texas blues groove. The tribute is so good, I was forced to acquaint myself with Nitro’s work. With guests Branch on harp, and Core on drums, Castro serves up a lively cocktail of Latin-infused blues with “Ain’t Worth the Heartache” for a fun, freewheeling original about moving on. Everything about “Freight Train (Let Me Ride)” is red hot. This cover originally from Ron Thompson and the Resisters features Pugh on piano and sounds amazing. Estrin appears again on a smokin’ recording of Eddie Taylor’s “Stroll Out West”. Castro sings this with a voice seemingly baptized in the Mississippi. This is what the blues is all about.

I think a lot of listeners will declare Closer to the Bone a favorite of 2025.  I sure have.

Eddie 9V, aka Brooks Mason first wowed me with his Little Black Flies record in 2021. He continued to draw me in on his 2023 release Capricorn. With his third and latest album, Saratoga, Eddie 9V delivers a gorgeous hat-trick, with this first three albums out the gate all hitting the bullseye. Cowritten with his brother Lane Kelly, Saratoga was recorded by the two multi-instrumentalists in their own studio Echo Deco Studio in Atlanta with guest musicians appearing on horns, lap steel, and fiddle.

Riding a propulsive rhythm with a locomotive beat, Saratoga opens with its title-track. The song bursts open with big waves of energy and poetic verse relating the trapped feelings of small-town living. Eddie’s soulful voice sounds absolutely remarkable. I soak up the goodness of the slow-pace, horn-infused track “Delta”. I can’t help but wrap myself up in its playful swampy groove. I love the fiddle-fueled genre-bending hillbilly hip-hop banger “Wasp Weather”. “Truckee” seemingly draws inspiration from classic rock bands like The Doobie Brothers and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young for its carefree, lazy Sunday feel. It’s a beautiful song. The cover of Mac DeMarco’s “Chamber of Reflection” is a brilliant make-over which takes the song to greater heights. “The Road to Nowhere” brings the record to its close with a western ballad served in a sea of twang-filled guitar topped with vocals reminiscent of music legend Roy Orbinson.  

Eddie 9V is definitely on a hot-streak. I absolutely adore Saratoga from beginning to end.

FreeWorld is definitely one of the must-see bands in Memphis Tennessee. For over thirty-seven years, this ever-changing ensemble has been captivating audiences and earning the utmost respect from their contemporaries. They sure have my full attention. In 2012 they were honored to receive a brass note on the Beale Street Walk of Fame. Fronted by Richard Cushing (producer/ band director/ lead vocals/ bass guitars/ shaker/ ratchet), FreeWorld is also comprised of Peter Climie (saxophones/ NuRAD EWI/ tambourine), Cedric Taylor (Hammond B3/ grand piano/ Wurlitzer/ Nord), Alex Schuetrumpf (trumpet/ piccolo trumpet/ flugelhorn), Courtney Reid (lead & backing vocals), Frank Paladino (baritone saxophone), Freedman Steorts (trombone), Walter Hughes (guitars), Matt Sweatt (drums). More Love, their eighth album is a melting pot of fourteen fresh original tracks baptized in the vibrant sounds of funk, jazz, soul, rock, and blues.

I’m instantly charged by the high-vibrational sounds of “Outta Sight”. The track ferociously tears the roof off and opens things up. The rhythm is slathered in funk, the horns are so hot they melt, and the guitar solo is phenomenal. Soaked in that Southern spiritual goodness, title-track “More Love, sung by special guest Jerome Chism with the Tennessee Mass Choir is a beautiful anthem. I dig the addition of slide guitar by special guest Aubrey McCrady into the intoxicating sounds of their reggae song “Heart on the Table”. That’s really unique. In numerology 11:11 refers to a reset or transition. FreeWorld brings it to song form with “11:11 on Beale”, a relaxed horn-fueled jazz instrumental which serves as a backdrop for a free-flowing spoken-word homage to Beale Street by Benjamin Theolonius “IQ” Sanders. It’s a very cool track indeed. “Who Knew” draws me in with its buttery rhythm before it really wows me with the sax-guitar dual, steering the song into a smoking instrumental. I snuggle right in to the feel-good and carefree blanket of “Nothin’ Wrong”. The song reminds me of the playfulness of one of my favorite bands Phish. Closing out the album is “D-Up (Here’s to Diversity)” the second of two bonus tracks. With lyrics written by FreeWorld’s drummer David Skypeck, the song made its first recorded appearance twenty-five years ago on their 1999 album called Diversity. The song was re-recorded in 2020 and featured over three dozen Memphis artists to make a ‘We Are the World”-inspired video with stars like Earl “the Pearl” Banks, Joyce Cobb, Luther Dickinson, Al Kapone and Blind Mississippi Morris. The version on this album is from the 2020 video and I absolutely love it.

FreeWorld’s More Love has everything I like to hear in an album. It has surely landed among my favorites for the year,

I love the riveting energy Micke Bjorklof & Blue Strip pour into their music. This Finnish band sure has a way of making the blues sound magical. Their latest album Outtakes is a nine-track collection of unleased songs ranging over their thirty-year career.  According to Bjorklof, “The album offers fans an exclusive look at these previously unreleased tracks that are still full of soul, groove and emotion”.  With Bjorklof, front and center on vocals, harmonica, and guitar, he is joined by Lefty Leppanen on slide, electric guitars, and vocals, Seppo Nuolikoski on bass, Teemu Vuorela on drums, and Timo Roiko-Jokela on percussion, malletkat and vibraphone.

Outtakes begins with the spirited and freewheeling “On Vacation”. Originally recorded during the Ain’t Bad Yet sessions in 2014, this instant-favorite sure rejuvenates my soul.  I love Bjorklof’s firey vocals and Lefty’s slide guitar performance on “Way to Go”. The song hits me like a gallop through Mississippi swampland. I’m captivated by the funky and bluesy rhythm which drives the beautiful and intoxicating 2002 track “Silver Moon”.  Loaded with delicious slide guitar, this one is absolutely brilliant.  They bring the album to an attention-grabbing end with “Spooky Ride”. This caffeinated track is loaded to the brim with smoldering musical jam. Everything fits together wonderfully tight as Vuorela guides them with his fierce and masterful drumming.

It’s a thrill to hear this Micke Bjorklof & Blue Strip Outtakes album. The glimpses it provides into band’s three-decade long history makes a great listen for existing fans, and new listeners both.

Kat Riggins has been a favorite songstress of mine for the past eight years. This Miami-based blues singer is an absolute gem and I find her music captivating. Her powerful and fearless voice lends an undeniable electric charge to every song she sings.  Revival, her sixth album release contains ten all-original songs featuring producer Tim Mulberry (bass/keys/drums/horns) and guitarist Eric Guess, and backing vocalists Shaelyn Mulberry and Mark Barner.

Smoking guitar licks surrounded by blasts of brass and bustling keys usher the album in a massive blues fashion with “Lucky”. I love Riggins’ Aretha-level vocals as they punch up the funky and riveting “Southern Soul”.  I can’t help but smile when she sings ‘When God made man, I betcha he started with a Southern soul.”.  “New Level” is a tremendous blues-rocker with an infectious riff. Topped with a tasty serving of greasy slide-guitar, this track definitely cuts to the bone. The propelling groove threaded through the heart of “Mojo Thief” sweeps me off my feet and pulls me right in. Riggins pours her magical shaman mojo into “Healer” to bring the album to a beautiful end. I admire the soothing and delicate guitar picking of Guess on this inspirational song. It really is a nice touch.

Kat Riggins and Her Blues Revival has won me over yet again with her rocking blues-soaked soul on Revival. I love it from start to finish.

I find a genuine affinity to the intoxicating sounds of Get Up Off the Ground, the second release from Utah-based blues-rockers Dick Earl’s Electric Witness. Taking third place at the 2023 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, this family-centric band certainly grabbed my attention with their masterfully crafted songs, smooth vocals, searing harmonica licks, and tight rhythm section. With Dick Earl Ericksen at the helm on guitar, banjo, harmonica, jaw harp, and vocals, he is joined by his son Isaac Ericksen (co-producer/bass guitar), his wife Alice Ericksen (co-producer/backing vocalist), Mari Ericksen (drums/percussion/backing vocals), Zoe Ericksen (backing vocals) Thomas Anderson (guitars/kalimba/charango/backing vocals), and Matt Green (organ/keys).

The album opens with title track “Get Up Off The Ground” which emits a very cool spaghetti-western/down-at-the-crossroads vibe. Topped with deliciously twangy guitar and a fiery harp performance, this is an absolute treat. Following up right behind is an ode to hitting the open road “Black Lines and White Crosses”. This call-back to the trucker songs of the Seventies has an infectious hook and strikes me with an instant familiarity. The Electric Witness serves up a big fluffy platter of funky blues with “Eggs”. I love the jam-band friendly approach they take with this track. It reminds me of one of my all-time favorite bands Phish. A thick groove, a pounding beat and thick bass guitar opens up the Latin-infused “Vinyard” for Dick to deliver a bone-crushing dose of scorching harp. This one is a downright amazing pozole of sound. Dick delicately balances his troubadour vocals and extraordinary harmonica prowess on “On Her Heart”. It’s a wonderful track.

Get Up Off the Ground hits like a classic Steve Miller Band record, as blues, rock, western, and Latin sounds merge together for big sound. Dick Earl’s Electric Witness has sure won me over with this record.

Kamama, the debut album from Washington, D.C.-based blues artist Carly Harvey is quite special. I love how her Indigenous roots shine through a carefully-curated mix of soul, blues, and jazz. Each of the eleven tracks are written by Harvey and performed with beauty and grace. Appearing with her on this recording is Jonathan Sloane, and WALKING EAGLE on guitar, Mike Tony Echols, Patrick Thornton, and Sean Hurley on bass, Deren Blessman and Leland Nakamura on drums, Coleman Williams and WALKING EAGLE on percussion, Wes Lanich and Daniel Clarke on keys, Danny Davis, Mario D’ Ambrosio, Kevin Cerovich, Ben Ford on horns, and Dana Nearing and WALKING EAGLE on backing vocals. Special guests appearing on the album include Joe Louis Walker, Doug Woolverton, Sean Hurley, Annika Chambers, Dave Keller, and WALKING EAGLE.    

The album begins with “Native Scat” a short introductory track in which Harvey delivers an amazing performance of Native vocables delivered in a fusion of delta blues and Indigenous percussion. WALKING EAGLE’s slide guitar performance is deliciously swampy. “Mean Old Woman” slides in next on a riveting wave of funky, horn-accompanied blues with Joe Louis Walker on guitar. It’s a terrific song, and Walker makes me smile as he pours his blues-filled magic on top. I absolutely love the Sixties-soul sound on “Misery”. Harvey’s vocals shine with pure delight and remind me very much of singing-legend Etta James. With special accompaniment from Doug Woolverton on trumpet, Harvey marvelously sings her all-original torch song “Please Do That To Me”. The song hits me with absolute bliss.

After looking up “Kamama”, the name of the title-track, I found the word to have dual meanings. One, a Cherokee name for girls which means “butterfly” which can represent hope, joy, and transformation. This gives a deeper meaning to the album art, which features a butterfly on both the front and back cover. The other meaning is of Kenyan origin, and is a plant known as Portulaca oleracea. It is used for food and medicine. With WALKING EAGLE on hand drum, and backing vocals, this short-in-length song is a lovely, glory-filled tribute to a girl named Kamama.

Alongside Harvey for the stirring and poignant track “Human Too”, is Dave Keller and Annika Chambers. Both guests share lead vocals, and Keller also takes on lead guitar. Kamama comes to a close with “Native Scat Reprise. With Harvey on vocals and hand drum, she is backed by WALKING EAGLE on flute. This short song dives deep into my core.

Carly Harvey’s Kamama earns my highest recommendation. It’s beautiful from beginning to end.

The Fury by Antonio Vergara is one of the 2025 Grammy-nominated releases for Best Contemporary Blues Album. From the first song of this thirteen-track original masterpiece, I surrender my utmost attention in return for a one-of-a-kind mystical blues journey.  Engineer/producer/multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Vergara boasts a career which has stretched over three decades, and the innovation and passion poured into this album definitely shows.

A tribal beat ushers the record in with “My Lucky Mojo” as Vergara’s melodic vocals float skyward. As soon as I hear him unleash his guitar, I knew this album was going to be absolutely amazing. “Delta Shine” encapsulates me with its riveting intro. The song is filled with unexpected treats within the groove. Vergara, with resonator guitar in hand, takes the listener for a walk through a Mississippi delta swamp on “Hoodoo”. An awe-inspired harmonica accompaniment is the icing on the cake. The horn-infused deep-blues groove which carries “Guitar Tree” pops like a secret hoedown in the dark delta woods. World-class Afro-fusion artist Tito Da Fire lends his voice to the spaghetti-western-friendly ballad “The Rebel’s Right”. I love how the song unravels into a furious guitar-heavy flurry of spoken word. Vergara cleverly brings The Fury to its final destination with “Outro”, a nearly fifteen-minute meditative experience filled with Native American chants, voodoo-inspired sound-bites, and the mysterious sounds of nighttime in the boondocks.

The Fury takes the Blues, bursts through to the other side and sticks the landing. It is a remarkable listen. I highly recommend it to all music fans.

The Legend of Sugarbelly from Guy Davis is an absolutely remarkable recording. The way he captures the pure essence of blues, folk, and Americana instrumentally and in verse simply amazes me. Davis, a two-time Grammy nominee for Best Traditional Blues Album pushes the boundaries of his talent as a writer, and singer, and multi-instrumentalist as he performs with six and twelve-string guitars, five and six-string banjos, harmonica, and percussion. Backed by Professor Louie on Hammond organ, Chris James on mandolin and six-string banjo, and Mark Murphy on double bass, and cello, Davis truly shines as he stitches together a baker’s dozen of fascinating songs, ten of which are original.

With banjo in hand, Davis leads the record off with “Sugarbelly”, a murder-ballad dedicated to his uncle William Conan Davis. This compelling song is based on a true story his uncle had told him about a woman who met a grim demise. With every listen to “Early in the Morning”, a wave of solemness washes over me. The acoustic guitar and heavy chords of Hammond instill a spiritual sense of a Southern Baptist hymn. As Davis sings “this time tomorrow, I may be gone”, I’m swiftly connected to memories of funerals. Breaking out the harp for “Long Gone Riley Brown”, Davis tears into a riveting, story-telling blues track about a moonshiner’s run-ins with the law and his post-death experience from dying of old age. Vice is nice as Davis keeps the moonshine whiskey theme going as he follows with the infectious banjo ditty “Come Gitchu Some”. I love his timeless cover of the Blind Lemon Jefferson classic “Black Snake Moan”. Sticking to the Ledbelly arrangement, he brings a certain freshness to this pre-war blues standard.

It’s always a pleasure to listen to Guy Davis. His traditional sense of playing the blues certainly plays an important role in keeping it alive.

Revelation by Piper & the Hard Times is one of the most riveting blues albums gracing my to-review stack of CDs in the past several months. I love the band’s energy, vibrant sound, and groove-filled songs. It’s no wonder they pulled down first place at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis earlier this year. Fronted by vocalist Al ‘Piper’ Green, the band is also comprised of Steve ‘The Conductor’ Eagon on guitar, Dave ‘Sexy Boy Himself’ Colella on drums/percussion, Amy ‘The Professor’ Frederick on piano/Hammond organ, and Parker ‘PH Funkstick’ Hawkins on bass. Guests include Shaun Murphy, Lisa Oliver-Gray, Melissa Gardner, Chris ‘Freight Train’ Floyd, Eddie Meyer, and Dick Aven.

From the opening song “Trouble Man”, I was totally onboard. This up-tempo, organ-infused jam quickly grabbed my attention with Green’s husky baritone voice and Eagon’s ripping guitar licks. “Hard Times” is a wonderful hard-driving blues-rocker. Piper’s vocals shine and the band absolutely cooks.  To hear the fabulous Shaun Murphy (Meatloaf, Bob Seger, Little Feat) step up to the microphone on this song puts a smile on my face. Hosting an infectious hook, and a funky groove, title-track “Revelation” truly wins me over. With Freight Train on harp, “Crave You” becomes a surefire barn-burner. Piper breaks out in full Howlin’ Wolf-mode on this one. I love hearing Murphy lend her amazing voice to “Walk With Me”.  It’s a wonderful experience to listen to her bounce lines back and forth with Piper.

No doubt, Piper & the Hard Times’ Revelation is a must for the blues fan. The record is definitely ranked among my favorites of 2024.

Christmastime is coming up soon, and for those in search for new holiday music, I’m going to have to recommend “Ben Levin Presents a Holiday Blues Revue”. This album plays like a timeless classic. Levin, a Blues Music Award nominee for Best Piano Player of the Year in 2023 and 2024, and nominated for Best Emerging Artist Album in 2020, brings in big-name guests Lil’ Jimmy Reed, Candice Ivory, Lil’ Ed, and Sonny Hill for this record. Also appearing on the album is his father Aron Levin on guitar, Takuto Asano on guitar, Joe Polen on saxophone, Eli Gonzales on saxophone, Walter Cash Jr. on bass, Jim Anderson on bass Chris Douglas on bass, Cole Baker on drums, Art Gore on drums, Ricky Nye on drums, and Oscar Bernal on drums. This Revue consists of a marvelous mix of ten seasonal tracks, eight of which are original songs.

“Candy Cane”, featuring Lil’ Ed on guitar and vocals, leads the record off with deluxe serving of Chicago blues. Listening to Ed and Levin join forces is indeed a riveting treat. I adore how Levin suavely delivers the 1961 Charles Brown song “It’s Christmas Time”. There’s a certain retro-feel to this memorable song which taps into my soul. Candice Ivory appears with Levin for the duet “Christmas Mood”. With the addition of Asano on guitar, they walk the line between blues and jazz. The jump blues of “Forgot Mrs. Claus” pulls me in tight for another wonderful track featuring Asano on guitar. I love Levin’s cover of Vince Guaraldi’s instrumental “Skating”. This one sure takes me back to the care-free days of my youth. Animated images of the Peanuts gang skating on a pond gush from my memories with every listen. It’s so very fitting to represent the Blues on Christmas with a “Lump of Coal” from Santa. Soaked in a barrel of deep blues, this song features Lil’ Jimmy Reed on guitar and vocals for an outstanding performance.

Ben Levin Presents A Holiday Blues Revue is a beautifully-crafted seasonal album which I could listen to anytime of the year.
